Purchasing a Home With a Septic System Doesn't Have to Be Scary

So, you've found the perfect home, with privacy, green grass, trees, and hills, in a quiet rural or country setting. But there is just one, or two problems, the private septic system and well. You have always had municipal sewer and water services, so the thought of owning a home with a private septic and well is daunting.

However, you do not need to let this deter you from purchasing the home of your dreams. Here are some things you can do for peace of mind, so that you know what you are getting into and what to expect down the line.

First you should request a septic dye test and inspection by a reputable inspector such as Aalco Septic & Sewer, Inc. This will ensure that there are no leaks or clogs in the septic drainage system, and that the system is constructed and functioning properly. A qualified inspector will know what to look for, and what questions to ask the seller to get you as much information as possible.

Next you should request a well water purity and water flow test to make sure that there are no harmful bacteria or contaminates in the well water. The water flow test will determine the output rate of the well. A flow rate of 3 or more gallons per minute for a period of time is normally recommended to ensure that there is adequate water available.

Once you are confident that the septic and well are in good working order and have purchased your new home, remember to do periodic maintenance to ensure proper function and longevity of the system by calling Aalco Septic & Sewer, inc. once every three to four years to pump out the septic tank. We will even send you periodic reminder postcards to keep you up to date. Owning a private septic system and well does not need to be scary, you can have peace of mind and we will help to ensure it.
